Porcelain, Eggshell
4' x 3' x 3'
Eggs have been a symbol of rebirth and renewal for thousands of years in both pagan and Christian mythologies. In this work a nest of weathered bones cradles a single luminous egg, a symbol of hope and possibility amidst death and destruction.

I completed this work after a trip to the Galapagos Islands, where the inevitable cycle of birth and death is readily apparent. Birds nest on barren open ground with only stunted trees for shelter, using seaweed and bones to create their nests. Skeletons and bodies literally cover the ground as you walk. Yet, animals and birds mate and bear young year after year, managing to not only survive in this inhospitable place but in some cases to even thrive.
